‘What is a meaningful Mother’s Day jewellery gift?’ many people ask every year. They mean well, but have no idea where to start. So, rather than turn up empty-handed, they resort to the usual flower bouquet or chocolate box. Hands up if that’s you too. I am here to show you another way.
Because, here is the thing. Flowers are lovely but don’t last. Chocolates too disappear quickly. Moreover, let’s be honest, will they even be remembered in a few months’ time ? That’s questionable.
Jewellery, however, has a different power.
It becomes part of someone’s life, holding memories and carrying stories.
Last weekend, which incidentally fell on the UN’s International Women’s Day, I taught my very first jewellery workshop. On that occasion I was reminded exactly why jewellery holds such emotional value.
Because when you see how a piece is made, you understand why it matters.
What Makes a Jewellery Gift Truly Meaningful?
A meaningful piece of jewellery is rarely about size or price.
It is about connection.
A piece becomes meaningful when it represents:
• a memory
• a relationship
• a milestone
• a story shared between people
This is why jewellery has been given for centuries to mark life’s important moments.
And Mother’s Day is one of those moments.
A carefully chosen ring, necklace or bracelet becomes something she will wear for years, sometimes even pass down to the next generation.
The best example of that is women coming to me with inherited jewels. They are deeply attached to these pieces and want a mindful remodelling that celebrates the person whom they have inherited the piece from.
What Happens When You See Jewellery Being Made
Last Saturday I ran my first jewellery making class. I had designed it for absolute beginners.
Participants sat at their bench.
I had prepared individual sets that included tools and materials, together with a printed guide, and placed them directly in each student’s place. Mainly metal sheets, hammers, files and a piercing saw.
At first there was hesitation. It was the first time they had held jeweller’s tools.
Then something fascinating happened.
Within minutes, and guidane, curiosity replaced hesitation.
People leaned closer.
They experimented with textures.
They discovered how metal responds to touch.
By the end of the workshop, each participant had made a textured cigar band ring entirely by hand.
And the reaction was always the same.
Surprise. Delight. Pride.
Because people suddenly realise something important:
Jewellery is not just an object.
It is craftsmanship, patience, focus, mindfulness.
Why Handcrafted Jewellery Feels Different
When jewellery is made by hand, every stage matters.
During the class, we went through some foundational techniques of traditional jewellery making.
These included :
- transfering the design of the ring onto the metal,
- texturing using carefully controlled hammer marks and a variety of punches,
- cutting the shape out with the jeweller’s saw,
- forming the ring using a mandrel,
- refining and filing the edges for a comfortable fit
That process creates something subtle but powerful.
Character.
All started with the same piece of metal. Yet no two handcrafted pieces are ever exactly identical.
This individuality is precisely what makes handmade jewellery such a meaningful gift and a wonderful experience.

The Story Behind a Textured Ring
During the workshop, participants created a textured cigar band ring.
This style of ring is loved because it combines:
• strength
• simplicity
• sculptural presence
The hammered texture catches the light differently every time the hand moves.
It feels both modern and timeless.
Some participants chose delicate textures.
Others preferred bold, organic patterns.
Each ring reflected the personality of its maker.
And that is the essence of jewellery.
It becomes personal.
Choosing a Meaningful Mother’s Day Jewellery Gift
If you are searching for a meaningful Mother’s Day jewellery gift, consider these questions:
Does it tell a story?
Jewellery inspired by nature, heritage or personal symbolism often carries deeper meaning.
Will she wear it often?
The most cherished pieces are usually those that feel effortless to wear.
Is it made to last?
Craftsmanship matters. Quality materials and thoughtful design ensure the piece can be enjoyed for years.
When these elements come together, jewellery becomes more than an accessory.
It becomes part of someone’s life.
Jewellery That Carries a Story
As a jewellery designer and maker, I believe jewellery should always carry a sense of meaning.
Every Essemgé piece is designed and handcrafted with this idea in mind.
Many designs are inspired by heritage motifs, natural forms, or personal experiences — from seaside memories to architectural patterns.
Because jewellery should do more than decorate.
It should resonate.

A New Way to Experience Jewellery
Last weekend’s workshop also reminded me of something else.
People love discovering how jewellery is made.
So later this year I will also be sharing more jewellery workshops and online guides for those who would like to experience the craft themselves.
Because once you understand how jewellery is made, you see it very differently.
And you appreciate its value even more.
