A Jeweller’s Honest Guide to Deciding What to Repair, Redesign or Let Go
Jewellery often carries stories that go far beyond its material value. A ring inherited from a grandmother, a necklace worn daily for years, a bracelet bought to mark an important moment — these pieces become part of our lives.
Yet many women eventually face the same question when something breaks or shows wear:
Is it worth repairing this jewellery, or would it be better to replace it?
As a jeweller, this is one of the most common questions I am asked at the bench. The answer depends on several factors: the craftsmanship of the piece, its materials, and often its emotional significance.
This guide will help you understand when jewellery repair is worthwhile and when another option may make more sense.

Why Jewellery Repair Is Often the Better Choice
In a world where many objects are designed to be replaced, jewellery is different. Well-made jewellery is intended to last for decades, even generations, and one of its greatest strengths is that it can often be repaired.
Unlike clothing or electronics, most jewellery components can be:
- reinforced
- resized
- re-soldered
- polished or restored
When a piece has been well made, repair can give it many more years of life.
For women who value craftsmanship and sustainability, repairing jewellery also aligns with a simple principle:
keep and care for beautiful objects rather than replacing them unnecessarily.
The Most Common Jewellery Repairs
Many problems that appear serious are actually straightforward repairs for an experienced jeweller.
Some of the repairs I see most frequently include:
Broken Clasps
Imagine, you are getting ready. You open your drawer, or jewellery box, intending on wearing your favourite necklace or bracelet but then you remember. You can’t! And that feels so frustrating. Why? Because that favourite piece of jewellery has a broken clasp. It is now sitting in its box, doing nothing but looking very sad.
Necklaces and bracelets rely on small mechanical parts that naturally wear with time. And actually a broken clasp is one of the easiest repairs and can often be replaced quickly.
Ring Resizing
Whether we like it or not, our fingers change over the years. Resizing allows a ring to remain wearable without altering its design.
Loose Stones
Gemstones can loosen after years of wear. Tightening the setting prevents the stone from being lost and restores the security of the piece.
Broken Chains
You like delicate jewellery but did you know that fine chains may break if caught or pulled. In many cases they can be carefully soldered and strengthened.
Worn Prongs
In rings, the tiny metal claws that hold a gemstone can gradually wear down. Rebuilding these prongs protects the stone and preserves the ring.
These types of repairs are often well worth doing, particularly when the jewellery is well made or carries personal meaning.
💡 Jeweller’s Tip
If a gemstone ring is more than 10 years old and worn regularly, it is wise to have the setting checked periodically. Small repairs at the right moment can prevent losing a stone.

When Jewellery Repair Makes Sense
Jewellery repair is usually worthwhile when one or more of the following applies.
The Piece Is Well Made
Handcrafted or well-constructed jewellery is designed to be maintained over time. Repair simply restores the integrity of the piece.
The Materials Are Precious
Solid gold, sterling silver and natural gemstones generally justify repair because the materials themselves retain value.
The Piece Has Emotional Significance
Many repairs are carried out not for financial reasons but because the piece represents a relationship, a milestone or a memory.
The Design Is Timeless
Jewellery that is classic in style can easily continue to be worn after repair.
When Repair May Not Be the Best Option
There are situations where repair is not the most sensible path.
The Jewellery Is Plated or Low-Quality
Gold-plated or very lightweight pieces may not withstand repair well, and the cost may exceed the value of the item.
The Structure Is Severely Damaged
If a piece has been heavily bent, cracked or worn down, rebuilding it may not be practical.
The Design No Longer Suits You
Sometimes the jewellery itself is perfectly repairable but you have simply evolved beyond it.
In these cases, another option may be worth considering.
The Alternative to Repair: Jewellery Redesign
Many women have jewellery sitting in a drawer that they rarely wear. The piece may be repairable, but its style no longer feels right.
Instead of repairing it exactly as it was, the jewellery can sometimes be redesigned into something new.
For example:
- a ring can become a pendant
- gemstones can be reset into a modern design
- several small pieces can be combined into one
Redesign allows the materials and memories to remain, while giving the jewellery a new life that reflects the present.
A Simple Question to Ask Yourself
If you are unsure whether to repair jewellery, ask yourself one simple question:
“Would I enjoy wearing this piece again if it were restored?”
If the answer is yes, repair is usually worthwhile.
If the answer is no, it may be time to consider redesigning the piece or passing it on to someone who will enjoy it.

Jewellery Is Meant to Evolve
One of the most beautiful things about jewellery is that it does not have to remain fixed forever.
A well-loved piece may be repaired several times during its life. A family ring may be redesigned for a new generation. A pendant may be passed from mother to daughter.
Rather than being static objects, the best pieces of jewellery evolve with the people who wear them.
If You Are Considering Jewellery Repair
If you have a piece of jewellery that is broken, worn or simply no longer feels right, the best first step is a careful assessment.
An experienced jeweller can usually tell quickly whether:
- the piece can be repaired
- it would benefit from redesign
- or another solution may be more suitable.
Sometimes the smallest repair can bring a piece back to life.
