Knots

Knots have an enduring appeal but do you know why? They are useful, decorative and powerful symbolisms. Discover how I have revisted them here.

Knots are a common theme in jewellery design but why?

What is their enduring appeal?

Practically knots are used to attach, tie and bind together for purpose of lifting, pulling or securing. Good knots are strong, secure, but also easy to undo.

They are also decorative and thus have naturally become powerful symbols for bonds, committment towards love, friendship and strength. They can also represent good luck.

Each culture has developed its own set of knotted shapes, but essentially their meaning is pretty much universal.

The way I have approached the theme of knots in my jewellery designs is by focusing on intertwined shapes. Visually they reference knots but they add extra interest, complexity and variety.

Their curves, the sense of volume and movement that result from interlocking simple geometric shapes is incredibly attractive. Knots as interlocked shapes are intrinsically mysterious. You will find yourself subconsciously trying to figure out where they start and where they end. The light playing will guide your eye and your finger will want to follow the lines and edges.

In the Knots edit, the humble circle takes centre stage. I have played on proportions, textures and colours to create 3 main distinctive looks – romantic, classic and modern. Enjoy exploring and find the piece that best represents love and friendship to you.
