Jewellery for Halloween

‘Halloween is a US celebration’, ‘Halloween is for kids’, I hear you say. Well, why should it be? Time to set new rules!

Halloween is actually one of the world’s oldest holidays. Its origin dates back c.2,000 years as a Celtic Fall festival, and was closely associated with the living, the dead and the spirits. It then lost some traction in Europe – its pagan roots didn’t sit well with the Christian faith – but gained popularity in the US from the 1700s onwards, with each wave of immigrants adding their own traditions. Since mid 19th century it hasn’t changed much from what we know today, ie games, treats and costumes.

It therefore follows that celebrating Halloween is actually keeping the ancient European folklore alive, wouldn’t you agree ? AND it involved everybody, adults and children, PLUS who needs an excuse to have fun? So let’s have a look at Halloween from a different perspective, that of gems and jewellery.

I will take you through

  • why I am advocating a jewelled Halloween,
  • suggest how you can style your outfit, and
  • finish off by the special Halloween jewellery edit.

Why Jewellery for Halloween?

Who cares about getting a Halloween costume? For the real trend-setter and the discerning consumer, it is all about jewellery and attitude! The full selection is available here.

Let me briefly expose the main reasons why I am all in favour of a bejewelled Halloween rather than the traditional fancy dress party.

My point is why settle for the expected? Why not instead dare outside the usual, the norm? It is not a call to rebel as per say, just a call to be creative, assert yourself and simply enjoy yourself. I am encouraging you to create your own Halloween tradition with some striking jewellery fit for the occasion and be a trend-setter.

I am a strong advocate of purchasing with purpose as well as of the circular economy. Choosing some beautiful precious jewellery that will last and that you can wear time and time again is not only a clever investment, but it is also making a strong sustainable statement. With a little flair, you can easily accessorize any black top that you have (who doesn’t ?) and create that dramatic look that everyone will notice and admire.

The easiest style ever!

Yes that is right, with a few caveats which I will explain.

In essence, the simpler your outfit the better. It will create the perfect backdrop to let your styling shine. So bring out your jewellery box and layer, mix to your heart’s content. More is more is more, especially on that occasion! You want to create drama and strong visual impact.

That said, there are a couple of caveats that I would suggest you consider to stay on the right side of taste vs tacky:

  • for your outfit, go for monochrome (black is the obvious choice but you can also go the other way with an icy white) and a simple sleek but flattering cut (a high neckline makes for a very elegant silhouette but it depends on the jewellery you will put on). That way you will ensure your outfit doesn’t distract from the focal point, your beautiful jewellery.
  • for your jewellery, try and stick to a few complementary colours, 3 is a good number. It remains harmonious but has enough variety to give you the space to create something really unique and special.

And now have fun! Both maximalists and minimalists will love the exercise, trust me! 🙂
