What do you mean ‘Halloween jewellery’? If that sounds totally alien, yet another fad, you are in for a big surprise. I am setting you a mission, to create new rules for Halloween and get bejewelled for the occasion! Don’t fright (excuse the pun!), I have done the heavy lifiting for you and it is all in the Special Halloween Jewellery Edit!
One of the world’s oldest holidays
Let’s rewind and start from the beginning first. Did you know that Halloween started as a Celtic Fall festival c.2,000 years ago? I hadn’t realised that it was that old. It gives it a special quality, a sort of aura. Fascinating don’t you think to celebrate to this day a pagan ritual that is steeped in time?
Initially associated with the living, the dead and the spirits, it met with severe restrictions from the Church in Europe. It then gained popularity in the US from the 1700s onwards with each wave of immigrants adding their own traditions. Since the mid 1800s it hasn’t changed much from what we know today, and mainly involves games, treats and costumes.
So my first point in favour of Halloween is that by celebrating it we are actually keeping the ancient European folklore alive. It has to be a positive thing, wouldn’t you agree ? AND it is inclusive since it involves everybody, adults and children, PLUS who needs an excuse to have fun? That’s already three reasons why Halloween needs to be on your agenda this year!
But let’s take it up a notch and have a look at Halloween from a different perspective. I am talking Halloween and the world of gems and jewellery. How does that sound for a combination? Wizardry!
Read on and I will tell you
- why I am advocating a jewelled Halloween,
- how you can style your outfit, and
- all about the special Halloween jewellery edit.
Why Jewellery for Halloween?
Who cares about getting a Halloween costume? I know, it is fun to dress up and look like a fool once in a while but if you are not into that sort of thing, you dread it or it makes you cringe then you are in for a treat because … for the real trend-setter and the savvy shopper that you are, it is all about jewellery and attitude! The full selection is available here.
Shall I tell you why I am all in favour of a bejewelled Halloween rather than the traditional fancy dress party? I am pretty confident you will agree with me.
My view is why settle for the expected? Why not instead dare outside the usual, the norm? It is not a call to rebel, not literally. Rather, look at it as an opportunity to be creative, experiment and simply enjoy the moment of light-hearted cheer. I am encouraging you to create your own Halloween tradition with some striking jewellery that is fit for the occasion and to become a trend-setter. People will not only admire you they will want to emulate you too! That is one of the best compliments you can receive.

The beauty of purchasing with purpose
Reducing and reusing, aka the circular economy, are things that are easy to do and that have an immediate impact on the wallet and the planet. Choose some beautiful well-made jewellery. It will last a long time and you will be able to wear it time and time again. Not only is it a clever investment, but it is also making a strong sustainable statement. With a little flair, you can easily accessorise any black top that you have (who doesn’t ?) and create that dramatic look that everyone will notice and admire. Be ready to get people asking for your advice and copying your style!
The easiest style ever!
Yes, that is right, with a few caveats though which I will explain.
In essence, the simpler your outfit the better. It will create the perfect backdrop to let your styling shine. So bring out your jewellery box and layer, mix to your heart’s content. More is more is more, especially on that occasion! You want to create drama and strong visual impact.

That said, there are a couple of caveats that I would suggest you consider to make it work every time.
For your outfit, choose monochrome
Black is the obvious choice but you can also go completely the other way with icy white. That would make quite a fabulous and unique statement too. When in doubt, choose a simple, sleek and flattering cut such as a high neckline. It makes for a very elegant silhouette. And it won’t distract from the main event, your beautiful jewellery. Now imagine yourself on the catwalk. It is all about that Couture look!
For your Halloween jewellery, my top 3 styling options are
Monochrome – Black or White
Super easy and straight forward. If your outfit is black, then go all in and choose black for your jewellery too. Similarly, if you have gone icy white for your outfit, then carry the colour scheme all the way through with an all silvery white jewellery to complement. That way it feels really intentional and put together.
I have deliberately created some designs in two finishes: classic polished silver or edgy oxidised silver, exactly for that reason. So that you can actually choose the one that fits the moment! You will be amazed at how the exact same design has a very different look and feel depending on its colour. Two personalites, two styles. Which one to pick is your choice.

Let’s just look at one of those designs: the Modern Rose Dangle Earrings. Charming in classic shiny or mysterious in moody dark. Wear on their own for a light touch or go for the complete look and pair with matching pieces from the range, either way monochrome styling will suit both. That is the beauty of it.
Colour Blocking – Opposite Colours Attract
My 2nd styling tip is again very simple and foolproof. ‘Colour blocking’ essentially means combining two colours that sit opposite to each other on the colour wheel. The obvious contrast for Halloween is the ‘black n white’ combo. Its enduring appeal is easy to see. There is a lot going for it. It is sophisticated, it is dramatic and it suits virtually every skin tone, hair colour and age! Where you get to decide and finetune the look to make it more tailored is how much of each colour you want in proportion of the other.
Let me clarify. Do you want mostly white with a few touches of contrasting black, or the reverse? It will essentially depend on personal taste. Here, the not-so-classic one-off Black & White Coil Opera Necklace is a statement neckpiece that instantly elevates your black top.

Keep in mind that this particular styling has character and personality. There is no way you cannot but be noticed. It is not for everyone but it looks fabulous and will certainly boost your confidence 10 notches!
Colour Pairing – Harmonious Colours Together
My 3rd and last styling tip for your Halloween jewellery. This one is perhaps a little bit more tricky to pull off, especially if you are used to wearing always the same colours or are afraid to make a faux pas.
As you will see in my Special Halloween Jewellery Edit I have focused on the 4 colours traditionally associated with Halloween, namely white, orange, red and black. That way, you have a limited number of colours to play with and experiement different combinations. There is very little chance of you going wrong so be creative and try mixing any number of them, see what happens!
What you are aiming for here is to choose complementary colours. 3 is a good number. It remains harmonious but leaves enough room to give you the space to create something really unique and special.
My Special Halloween Jewellery Edit
I have put together a selection around the 4 colours of Halloween, namely:
- Orange, the colour of confidence and joy
- Red, the colour of passion and life
- Black, the colour of mystery and elegance
- White, the colour of brilliance and grace
The full Halloween jewellery edit is available for you here.
I am showing below two of the most dramatic colour pairings: red & black, and orange & white.

Which one will you go for, the sensual black & red or the ‘fire and ice’ orange & white? Or maybe you fancy a completely different colour pairing all together? Leave in the comments your thoughts.
I hope this will have given you some styling inspiration. Feel free to post images on Instagram of your outfit for the occasion, don’t forget to tag @essemgejewellery and use the hashtag #essemgexme. I will make sure to reshare.
