Jewellery Care

Jewellery care – learn how you can keep your precious jewellery looking beautiful for longer with our recommendations below.

The instructions under the main Dos and Donts sections are quite generic. They will apply in most instances, however there are exceptions.

Please read the full set of recommendations before starting to check whether your jewellery piece does require more specific care and attention.

Disclaimer: This guide is based on the assumptions that your jewellery is waterproof (so no elements, coating, bonding agent etc soluble in water) and non ferrous (ie doesn’t include components that are susceptible to oxidise / rust). The jewellery can be precious, non precious or a mix of both. Provided your jewellery fits those assumptions, then you can go head and care for your jewellery safely yourself. However in case of any doubt please contact me first.

Dos

As with any piece of jewellery, when you don’t wear it, keep it in a box or pouch, ideally separate from your other jewellery to avoid scratches and chains to get tangled.

Put the jewellery in a container, glass or plastic is fine.

Leave to soak for a couple of minutes in lukewarm water and mild soap. The dirt will fall off at the bottom of the container.

Rinse under clear lukewarn water.

Pat dry with a soft clean cloth and leave to dry completely before wearing again, or storing.

By following that process and storing your jewellery in a separate air-tight container you will keep it looking shiny and beautiful for longer.

Donts

Do not scrub or rub as this will affect the surface of the stone and the metal.

Do not drop on hard surfaces or the stone might be damaged.

Avoid putting beauty products after putting your jewellery on, as residues will build up in the little recesses, making it more difficult to clean.

Do not put in acidic liquids. That includes all the fruit juices, vinegars, coca-cola. They are very corrosive and will permanently damage the stones including pearls.

Similarly do not wear at the swimming pool as the chlorine will also have permanent negative effect on your jewellery.

For pearl necklaces or similar

Any piece of jewellery such as pearl necklaces that has been thread onto organic (usually silk or cotton) beading wire will require additional care. Simply follow the recommended steps below.

Avoid soaking the necklace or this risks losening the thread, thus mishaping the necklace when dry or worse still, weakening the beading wire to breaking point.

The easiest way is to gently wipe the stones after every wear. If these are pearls you can use a tiny drop of baby oil. Otherwise just a soft damp cloth is enough.

By following that simple process consistently each time you wear your jewellery,  you will avoid build-ups of dirt and grease from the skin.

Any excess can be removed with a soft damp cloth.

For a more thorough clean, you can use lukewarm water and soap. Follow a similar process as outlined above in the main ‘Dos’ section.

However before you start, place the necklace in a container, then soak in water and soap. Replace with fresh lukewarm water to rinse. Repeat until the water runs clear.

Pat dry and then lay the necklace on a soft cloth over a flat surface. Leave it to dry completely before storing or wearing it again.

The main thing to remember is to NOT hold the jewellery under running water or the weight of the beads might pull on the wet thread excessively and loosen the necklace. Follow our instructions and you will be fine!

For jewellery with silicone rubber

If you have invested in a fabulous one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery that I created using repurposed industrial silicone rubber, you will need to be aware of a few specifics.

The silicone rubber that I have carefully selected is safe to wear and won’t cause allergies.

Although it is strong and durable it requires to be handled as any more traditional jewellery, ie with care.

Do not expose to extreme temperatures and prolonged sunlight. This will negatively affect the flexibility of the rubber.

Do not use sharp implements as any cut into the silicone rubber is irreversible.

Do not store by bending forcefully the rubber to fit into a tight container. Try to coil it loosely. This will keep the beautiful flow of the cord.

Regarding cleaning, just follow the process outlined in the main ‘Dos’ section. Once the jewellery is clean and fully dry, you can dust a little talc powder over the rubber if you find it gets a little sticky for your liking. This step is purely optional. Remove any excess with a soft dry cloth.

Obviously the main Dos and Donts above still apply as well.

Your jewellery is now ready to wear again!
