I am really excited to take you behind the scenes with me and show you how I have created an absolutely stunning bespoke chain necklace that was commissioned by one of Essemgé’s long-standing customers.
If you have ever wondered how you can commission a piece of jewellery then you will love this insight into a special commission that I was honoured to work on which was for a bespoke chain necklace. I was delighted when one of my most regular customers approached me with a special project. She really loved the nought chain necklace but wanted to commission one made just for herself.
A collaborative effort
When this gorgeous lady reached out, I knew it was going to be an exciting journey. The reason why she wanted to commission a necklace was because she had an important public event that she was attending.
Working together, we decided to create something totally bespoke to her wishes. The brief was that the necklace should fit her outfit for the occasion but also that she could easily rewear. It had to stand out and make her feel really elegant and sophisticated.
The result is a striking bespoke chain necklace that drapes like a scarf. It is very easy to put on, has an incredible flow and injects style to any outfit instantly. It exudes power and femininity.
In order to achieve this, we have worked on several key elements:
- the way the necklace moves
- the way it closes
- how the light bounces
- the materials used

The power of a well-considered clasp
Did you realise that the design of a clasp can really elevate your piece of jewellery?
It can be both functional and beautiful rather than being simply utilitarian. Here we have opted for a t-barre type of fastening. It ensures the necklace closes extremely securely, it is also very easy to put on / off and finally it complements the rest of the design by creating a focal point.
Light is your magic wand
How a piece of jewellery catches the light is perhaps the most important aspect of the design, after its wearability.
It brings it alive and it gives you that instant glow, so flattering and youthful.
Here we went for a mix of materials – silver and a double row of gemstones. The contrasting textures and colours create interest and draw the eye along the chain necklace, delighting the viewer as little details and surprises are revealed with your every move.
We also created graduated diamond-shaped chain links by coiling the silver wire on its square edges rather than flat. Lastly each chain link has been soldered with its ends staggered. All of these elements help create an impression of volume and airyness as the light bounces against the textures, curves and edges.

Precious metal and gemstones, sure but which ones?
Choosing the appropriate materials is a chance to make it truly bespoke to you.
This lovely client was clear that she wanted the necklace to be versatile enough but did not want to compromise on quality. Silver was therefore an obvious choice but we wanted to add some colour as well. After thorough research, we sourced some gorgeous faceted dumortierite bead gemstones. They were just perfect for that necklace. Their denim blue hue looks subtly sophisticated, while their facets glisten with the light. Dumortierite is also known for its calming powers, great for our valued customer who has a very busy lifestyle!
