About Essemgé – Introducing Sophie, its designer-maker.
I am Sophie, the designer behind Essemgé (which stands for ‘SMG’, my initials with a French twist, in reference to my origins).
Conscious of today’s active lifestyles and/or work environments, I have designed pieces that are versatile and practical yet eye-catching and inspiring, to give you choices of how to wear them.
I draw inspiration from my experiences and surroundings.
My earlier career in banking, in particular, has taught me that every successful woman has developed a signature style that’s unique to her. Jewellery is an essential part of it. It makes her feel polished, confident and empowered, ready to take on the challenges of a fast-paced often male-dominated workplace.
The surroundings of South East London where I have my studio, have also influenced my designs. The mix of urban, industrial and maritime heritage has created a visually striking landscape, where order meets chaos, old meets new, shiny meets rusty, established meets upcoming. It certainly is the ideal backdrop to feed my imagination.
My other passions include drawing, watercolour painting, antiques/vintage hunting/collecting, restoring/diy as well as many more! Interestingly I have found that all of these activities have contributed to inform my jewellery designs, even if only in a roundabout way for some of them!
Jewellery is highly individual. For each of my creations I strive at making it the best, that is the one that looks good on you.
Playing on colours, textures and volumes yet keeping lines clean and simple makes Essemgé jewellery an attractive choice for those who choose style over fashion.
All the pieces are lovingly handmade in the UK, with attention to detail and quality of work using only great materials sourced in the UK.
Bespoke jewellery and commissioned work are also welcome.
Forget Fashion, Embrace Style !
